When I start my PC, a problem has stopped Window from opening the HP Advisor. A message appears in the screen that HP Advisor has stopped working. Window prompt that it will try to find a solution and advises to close the programme but no solution was found.

I'd try to check hp.com/support and see if there are any updates for hp advisor on your product page. You can also try opening the recovery manager and go to software reinstallation. See if it is listed. If it is then uninstall and reinstall that way. The most drastic option is of course a system recovery. You also always have the option to just uninstall it.

Same thing has happened to me. I checked with HP and they said "sorry but your warranty is finished". They were very unhelpful. This seems a common enough error - surely there must be a fix somewhere?

You probably should try going back to a known good system restore point before your problems started occurring.
Right mouse click on my computer, then properties, then system protection and click on the restore button. When the restore window opens, click on the box to show all available restore points and then a date when your PC was last working correctly. If you are using Norton AV then be sure to turn off "tamper protection" under the miscellaneous setting before trying the restore process.

Thanks. Good idea - tried it. But if the advisor isn't working, then neither is the system restore. Catch 22...

Windows restore and Advisor have nothing in common. If Windows restore doesn't work then your PC has other issues.
