Hello,
I am having problems updating the bios on HP 6710b. The reason I am trying to update is fan noise, it is incredibly loud. I have cleaned the fan and heatsink off of dust recently. This is on a fresh XP Professional install with drivers installed.
My HP 6710b is running on F.04 bios dated 04/02/2007, which is quite old. There are several updates to this, most recent being F.20 dated 1/12/2011.
The problem is that trying to update to F.20 an error occurs, saying "This update requires rom version F.10 or above" via USB thumbdrive.
Updating to F.10 requires SSM.
Here are the installation instructions as follows for F.10:
NOTE: To flash the System BIOS on a target notebook in
a network, the System BIOS image must be used with SSM.
1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE file to a directory
on your hard drive.
2. Copy the SoftPaq to the file store.
To my undestanding this means downloading the newest SoftPaq available and selecting the bios update via software in question. However SoftPaq does not show a bios update available.
How do I update my HP 6710b to bios version F.20 succesfully? Please help!

I have found a solution. All you have to do is download BIOS F.10 sp38259.exe ! Do not download version sp38258.exe !
BIOS F.10 sp38259 automatic installation version
After that upgrade there is no problem to instal F.20 version.

Thank you for your swift reply!
Refering to "To flash the System BIOS on a target notebook in

How exactly are those packages flashed with SSM?
I am customed to updating bioses via local media such as usb thumbdrives, cds and floppy disks through BIOS prior to loading operating system.

Download System Software Manager here.
It takes about 3-4 minutes to install. It will automatically detect the model number of your notebook and search for updates. When it is done searching and loading, it will look like the picture below.
All of the updates available for your notebook will be listed. Some may be listed as Critical in Red.
Step 1 - Choose which updates you want and check the box next to them.
Step 2 - Click the Install button in the top left corner.
Also, here is the Using SSM Guide with additional information. Please let me know what issue or questions you have 🙂

It is not a solution. The SDM (SoftPaq Download Manager) program do not upgrade BIOS version. It shows the newer version F.20 available but when I try to instal it there is information tht first I have to instal F.10 version.
So still I need to first instal F.10 version and then F.20 version.
Basicly how to instal F.10 Version? Double click on this F.10 version doesn't work.
