I know the password to my laptop, but every time I try to log in, it says it's wrong. I know it's right. I wrote it down and everything. Why won't it let me log in?

Hello MaddiAlexandrea, welcome to the HP Forums.

It appears that the notebook is saying your password is incorrect. I will try to help you with this.

If your running Windows 8/8.1 on the notebook this document should be able to help you: What to Do When You Forget Your Sign-in Password (Windows 8).

This one if using Windows 7: What to Do When You Forget Your Login Password (Windows 7).

Please let me know how this goes for you.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

I am running windows 10 and the computer has locked becasue of too many login attempts.  It was in sleep mode and I woke it up & attempted to login with my fingerprint, and then with my password, but it doesn't recognize my password either. I don't want to shut it down and start up again because I have an app running and I don't want to lose any data (it's tax software). How can I get in?

Hi @NannaD,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I understand you left the computer idle for a while and now it's locked,

While the password has been pushed far into your inaccessible memory cells, no worries, there are a few steps available to help you out:

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

What is the product number of this computer? (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...) http://hp.care/2bygf7l

What type of account have you created? Is it Microsoft account or local account

Before we begin we need the answer to the question: Which type of account did you create?

Try this first: Use the HP Guided Solution: Let us guide you through the solution

Microsoft account

Reset your Microsoft account password online. You can reset your password on any device connected to the Internet.

See the Microsoft password reset page (in English) to reset your password.

Local account

Use one of the following options to reset the password for your local account.

* If you have created a password reset disk, use the disk to reset your password. See Reset your local user account password using a password reset disk.

* If you do not have a password reset disk, you may be able to reset the password from a different administrator account. See Changing the local user account password from another user account.

* If you are not able to access the account see Accessing your account when no other option is available

For more details: Click here.

Let me know how that pans out,

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

Thank you for your reply. These were solutions that I had already read about and considered. I have a Microsoft account, not a local one & I really didn't want to reset the password, I wanted to know why it wouldn't recognize the correct password. I eventually tried a restart, even though I was afraid of losing data (I didn't). But I still couldn't login, still locked out due to too many attempts. So I signed into my husband's account on my computer to see if I could change my user account - no luck, he's not an administrator. But when I logged him off and again tried to log myself in, voila! It worked. I have no idea why, but at least my computer is usable again.
