Good morning! I have a question for those of you who know way more about notebooks than I do (pretty much everyone)!
I am expecting any day now the notebook I ordered.......I'm totally excited about it! The model is HPDV7 which I ordered from QVC.
It is a 17.3" 6gb RAM and 500 gb HD (pearl white
, Blu Ray player, 3 years of McCafe, Win 7, HD 4200 graphics card, Lightscribe, Wireless LAN card, integrated ethernet, etc. etc. etc.
First of all.....does this sound like a nice notebook? I've only had Dell's prior, and have been.......under impressed.
Here's my question.......the info states that is does not come with a built in modem. Another HP notebook that they carry, it was either the DV4 or the G60..........states that it DOES come with an internal modem.
So why doesn't the one I bought have one? And.......how will this notebook connect without a modem? Does the wireless card take the place of that?? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am just over my head here I guess.
If you need any more info on it, let me know. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Roni, you only need a modem if you plan to connect to the internet using a dial-up service.
What do you have?
The DV7 is a nice fast laptop.

Thanks for the quick answer! I have wireless through my cable company, is that what you mean? I think it says "broadband".
Why do they put modems in some of the laptops, but not others (just curious)? This one I'm getting does have the thing on the side where you can plug in a phone cord if you have to....I guess for when you're traveling? Sooooo, if I'm traveling, and say the hotel doesn't have wireless........I won't be able to connect since I don't have a modem? Are there like portable, external modems? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!

Roni what model # is the DV7?
If you have a phone jack then you have a modem.
Yes there are external modems that plug into a USB port on the DV7.

Oh, here is another question, although it's really still the same as the first question......Is the only reason I don't need a modem, because I have a cable modem hooked to my desktop that this notebook will connect off of?
What if this notebook was my ONLY computer, would I have to have a modem then?? (They said this has so much space, etc. that it could be a desktop replacement)
SO what about traveling......if the hotel has no wireless.....can I connect without a modem?
I'm sorry to keep asking, but I just don't understand........

I think that you are confusing the RJ-45 for a phone jack.
You can also connect using the RJ-45 port (ethernet).
