C3180 suddenly stopped printing.

OS Windows XP. Printer worked two days ago but suddenly won't print anything at all. When asked to do so, just makes nasty noises and then error light blinks. Have checked and carriage moves, albeit a bit noisily, there is  no paper jam and the paper tray has adequate paper. I've tried everything I can think of but can't even print test sheet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
