I have attached a link below which should work for your printer. it provides troubleshooting steps to follow.
I hope this is of some help!

I have the same problem. I have followed the troubleshooting steps in the link above and - as a last resort - am attempting to replace the print head. The HP store told me that the part no. was CD868-3002 and gave me a list of places to buy it. None of them sell it or have had it in their inventory.
Where can I get this?

Hi cassc. Your Officejet 6500 must be out of warranty? You can doublecheck your printer's warranty status here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/weInput?cc=ie&l
But if your printer is out of warranty, you will have a buy one. For an Officejet 6500, the part you actually need to order is CN643A. If you are in the US, here’s the HP Part Store page where you can order the new printhead assembly: http://h20141.www2.hp.com/HPPARTS/Search_Results.a
If you aren’t in the US, start from this page: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwhowtobuy.htm
Also, here’s a support document that should help you with the printhead replacement: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
I work with HP but my posts and replies are my own.

I spent 6 hours trying to track down the other part number that was given to me by the HP store. You're link fixed my problem in 30 seconds. Wish the guy at the HP Store had the training you have!

My printer will print other colors but not black. I took the printer head off and cleaned it and replaced a new black cartiage. what else can I do. I did not get an error message.

Hi sharG - Have you seen this support document on print quality problems? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
Actually removing and physically cleaning the printhead is not a recommended solution. Instead, you can clean the printhead through the control panel - press the Setup button (little wrench icon), then choose Tools and then Clean Printhead.

I did the cleaning like you suggested. That didn't help. It printed a page with all the colors but black. So I tried printing one page of a document and it printed very faint purplish color but fifn't do all the page - like the lines of a table grid etc...

The following is not sanctioned or recommended by HP, but I have seen several cases with similar models where soaking the printhead in hot water has resolved the issue. See the post here for example.
