HP OfficeJet Pro 6978

My 87-year old Dad needed new inkjet cartridges for his OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer.   I went to Walmart and bought a brand new set of HP replacement cartridges (XL Black and all colors in a multi-pack).  It was about $100.  I replaced the cartridges and printed a test page and everything was working great.   Two days later he receives the "Printer Failure" error saying there is a problem with the printer or print system.  "0x6100004a".   Of course, we have powered the unit off and on.  We have unplugged it and plugged it back in.  We made sure there were no paperjams in the top feeder, the glass left edge feeder, the paper tray feeder.   We made sure the paper tray is inserted correctly.   Any other ideas??   I see a lot of others having a similar problem a few years back.   I was hoping to see an appropriate fix from HP for this issue by now.   Can you help???
