Yesterday my printer would not print. Message on printer screen (not on my Mac screen) that said HP software update available.

I clicked the box to install without thinking that this might be malware and installed the update using the printer buttons.

After installation, the printer worked just fine but I started thinking that the notice might be malware because I've never before had a software update via the device itself. Also there are no HP printer updates this week via Apple.

I checked the HP site and see no hardware updates either and ran MalwareBites Anti-Malware software which found nothing suspicious.

However I would appreciate hearing from HP to confirm that the update I installed from the HP printer itself was legitimate. Thank you.

Hi -e-

Welcome to the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you would like to verify if the printer update you installed was genuine and not a malware.

Let me assure you that it is not a malware if the update was displayed on the printer's screen.  Updates are sometimes rolled out via the Eprint server directly to the printer when the printer is connected to the network and has webservices enabled.

Thanks!
