HP Envy 6030
macOS 10.15 Catalina

There appears to be a bug in the firmware of HP Envy 6030 printer relating to the Scan function. This manifests itself as follows when communicating with a MacOS (10.15.x) platform with which HP documentation states the Envy is compatible. Printer Serial: [Personal Information Removed] Printer firmware: VASVBASPP1N001.2034A.00 (up to date) Installed Printer Driver: Mac AirPrint (built in to HP Envy) The fault:

  1. Open Scan/Copy lid. Printer immediately enters Copy mode. All Copy indicators on the printer are lit, active and awaiting user input of number of copies to make. Any attempt from any scan app, including HP Smart, HP Web Scan, MacOS Preview, MacOS Image Capture; MacOS System Pref; to initiate a scan generates an error. The Envy reports that it has failed to carry out an overview scan. HP Web Scan simply states: “An error has occurred.” The printer and WebScan then hang.
  2. Close Scan/Copy lid and cancel all Copy indicators. Printer resets to standby.
  3. Launch any scan app with the lid closed and no documents on glass and the Envy carries out a blank overview scan using all apps. Open lid to insert document and the Envy immediately defaults to Copy mode and disables the scan function again.
  4. There is no evident method for disabling or resetting the default Copy mode whenever the scan/copy lid is opened.

It is clear that the fault is not within the MacOS scan software or even HP Smart or HP WebScan software which all work correctly on other – even older – HP printers. The fault therefore seems to point directly at the HP printer software itself and needs to be fixed rapidly otherwise the Envy is not fit for purpose as advertised.
Can anyone suggest a remedy or a workaround that will allow the scanner to work normally?

Thanks.
