LaserJet Pro MFP m227fdw
Linux

I purchased a LaserJet Pro MFP m227fdw, which is described as having full Linux support (see https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index).

Unfortunately, scanning from Linux requires the installation of a proprietary binary plug-in, and it will not scan using the HPLIP open driver on its own. This is particularly annoying because I purchased this printer specifically to have a mono laser printer that has network print and scan support in Linux with an open driver; I would not have bought the device otherwise. The printer will not even scan over USB in Linux without the plug-in, which I can do for example on an HP Envy Photo 7830, as well as on a Samsung laser printer. I urge HP to update HPLIP to include scanning support for this printer, so that it functions as stated and advertised.

Another issue with this printer is that it will not read common file systems such as exFAT, and one has to use a simple FAT-formatted USB drive to get it to read data. (Again, the HP Envy Photo 7830 does not have this problem.)

Any assistance will be appreciated. Thank you..
