Older Generation Cartridge message after replacing an HP 952 LOS52A with a brand new exact type cartridge which was purchased long ago, but is newer based on warranty dates on the cartridges.

Printer was put on-line Wi-Fi share for the first time since the printer was purchased  and the firmware may have automatically been updated.  Previously it was connected directly via usb port.

All issues with "Older Generation Cartridge" issues received workable solutions as "private responses" not viewable by the public..  their printers were probably still under warranty and mine is not and therefore, most likely not to get a response, even it is most likely an issue some from HP.  This printer is for home use to print cards by a woman who is 96 years old to send to friends and can not learn a New OS, New Program, New camera and a New printer at this time.  She had some troubles when she had to move from Windows XP to Windows 7 as that is what happen then and she does not want to go though this again.  At least now she does use a camera so  she wouldn't have to worry about that.  Is there a public or private answer that will fix this problem for us?  Thank you.

Here's what you can try to fix the "Older Generation Cartridge" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 with a genuine HP 952 cartridge:

General Troubleshooting:

Clean and Reinsert Cartridges:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove all the cartridges and clean their electrical contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly and securely.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check Firmware Update:

  • Visit the HP support website for your specific printer model: Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Check for any available firmware updates and download them.
  • Install the firmware update on your printer following the provided instructions.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for 30 seconds, then plug the power cord back in.
  • Turn the printer on.

Manually Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • If the above steps don't work, try manually cleaning the cartridge contacts more thoroughly.
  • Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer carriage.
  • Let the contacts dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.

Hi Gaya1239,

I have downloaded the latest for my Mac and am searching for Windows Edge for Windows 7 which is required by HP to install the latest for Windows 7.

I must leave now and will not be back for 4 hours but will continue to research the Windows 7 Edge issue when I return and check for any information from you.

After updating the Mac and trying to print a test page it failed.  I believe that is because it says the status of Magenta is unknown.  That is the cartridge that has the Older Generation message.  I tried powering off and unplugging  the printer for awhile the powered it back up after the firmware/software updates.  No change on the cartridge status.

Thank you .

Sincerely,

1-Old_User

Tried loading firmware HP office jet 8710/8720 ,OJP8720_2105A.dmg and when loading it tells me it is not for this printer. ??

I selected Office Jet 8720 which was found in the search for the load.
