Help! BIOS update IPISB-NK Motherboard 7.11 Rev A of Mar 2014 (file sp56743) for BIOS AMI 7.05 of Sep 2011 on 520-1070 Desktop of Feb 2012 - is it advised before Windows 10 upgrade?  HP Customer Support web says update BIOS before.  Procedure for BIOS update stresses importance of correct Motherboard SSID; followed procdure - found Motherboard IPISB (LavocoSB) - no SSID shown.  Also did startup interrupt and found Sytem BIOS LAV_705.ROM v 7.05. Are AMI 7.05 and LAV_705.ROM v  7.05 the same and should the BIOS IPISB-NK be downloaded and installed as a replacement for the AMI 7.05 BIOS?

Hi there @HarvofStPaul,

May the Forums be with you!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.  I understand that you are looking for help with the correct BIOS to load prior to an upgrade to Windows 10.  I am happy to assist you with this.

An easier way to determine which BIOS update to use, would be to try the HP Support AssistantHP PCs - Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8, 7)  It should automate the process of searching for available and valid updates for your system. Give it a try.  Also just in case you have not seen it, here are the HP recommended steps to take prior to upgrading to Windows 10:  HP Desktop PCs - Upgrading to Windows 10. It may be what you have already looked at, but if not, it has useful advice to protect your system and personal data.

Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.  I have tried HP Customer Support - HP Desktop PCs - Upgrading to Windows 10 - Steps to take before upgrading - Updating the BIOS and followed the procedure to find my Product Specification Motherboard IPISB-NK (LavacaSB) from the web.  I don't know if this is for the ROM SSID.  My Windows 7 System Information shows the installed BIOS as AMI 7.05 of Sep 2011.  I also tried the other method of determining my BIOS given in Finding the ROM SSID (not connect to the web and interrupting the startup)  and found System BIOS LAV_705.ROM v 7.05.  HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads for my HP TouchSmart 520-1070 Desktop PC has many progams and drivers which I have downloaded and installed; it also has a IPISB-NK  Motherboard BIOS Update 7.11 Rev A of Mar 2014.  Because of the lack of consistency in identifing the BIOS, the many Forum dificulties with the updating of BIOS, and the warnings in the HP Desktop PCs - Updating the BIOS, I am looking for help.  Is the HP indicated IPISB-NK Motherboard BIOS 7.11 Rev A the correct one for my installed BIOS AMI 7.05?

I would try the HP Support Assistant, as I mentioned. If there is an update for the BIOS available, it should find it. If not, then just go to the next step in the upgrade process.

Thanks again for the reply.  I am preparing for an upgrade from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 10 and trying to be as exact as a computer in my prep (not maybe right).  I continue to be worried that there may be a mismatch on the BIOS.  The Windows 7 System Information shows BIOS AMI 7.05, 9/30/2011 and the HP BIOS Update shows Motherboard IPISB-NK (LavacaSB) BIOS 7.11 Rev A, file name sp56743.exe of 3/26/2014.  I have read the HP instructions for updating the BIOS before the Windows 10 upgrade and the many Forum requests for help after dificulties and want to be as exactly right as my HP TouchSmart 520-1070 Desktop.  Can you reassure me?

The sad truth is that in any upgrade, there are no guarantees, just probabilities. The best thing you can do is make all preparations first. Make sure you have made recovery media, if you haven't already. Do a complete backup, to an external device, or make a complete image of the hard drive using a third party tool of your choice. If you have taken all the precautions, you have protected your data, and have the ability to go back to your old installation if there is a problem. When you think about the millions of people that have already done the upgrade with no issues, the odds are well in your favour, but there is no way to predict a power outage or component failure at a critical time. So precautions are always a good idea.

The reality is that the internet often creates a misleading perception, because people are far more likely to post about a problem they had, than they are to post when something works great.

Thanks again, but I have not seen an answer to my question.  I expected a more thoughtful answer.  Maybe you don't have access to reference sources or maybe you want me to go away and just install the only BIOS I see on HP Support for my 520-1070 TouchSmart Desktop and hope for the best.  I don't understand why you will not say that BIOS AMI 7.05 is an older but matching name for BIOS LAV_705.ROM or that it is not a match.  An answer to that question will be great and a thumbs up.
