One of the USB 3.0 ports on this host suddenly stopped working.
Is there some way to check its condition (no obvious outside cosmetic problems
or connector problems)?
Re-enable?
Replacement? This USB adapter was HP-installed at purchase.
Thanks, ==mwh

Try removing the USB expansion card and then install it again in the same slot, and test again. If that does not help, try one of the other available PCIe slots.
If there is still no change with the issue, then it is probably the card itself that has the problem. In that case, please use the following http://www.hp.com/contacthp, fill out the form, create a case for your issue and then use the provided information to contact HP.

Ok, I hope you or someone else with some ideas is still there.
Back to having this problem again.
Now it is constant.
The HPE 490t has 2 USB 3.0 ports exposed on the back.
Plugging into one port - the one away from the center - always yields this message:
"Power surge oA USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port
For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
Clicking on it shows 4 ports that have to be clicked. This hardware port never works.
The other USB hardware port, the one towards the center, always works.
The same device plugged into this port will work.
Looking in the device manager, I don't see anything using an excessive amount of power
on any of the USB hubs. It's hard to match the device the error message complains about
to what device manager shows.
I looked thru the USB problem diagnosis mentioned but I didn't see anything that applied:
I don't have a Texas Instrument XHCI controller listed
I don't see Nvidi USB EHCI
Don't have Error:Activation failure of BIOS USB
The front USB ports work
Any advice / assistance appreciated!

Hi @cecinit,
I'm tagging in for @Tardis40, who is no longer available. Looking at the error you are getting it sounds like the device you are plugging into your USB ports is one that is requiring a higher amount of power to function properly. The fact that it works on one port well and not on another is not very surprising. One most most computers there is often a USB port that is dedicated for charging or fast charging and so has more power to play with. Those USB ports will normally have a lightning bolt incorporated into the symbol.
If you want connect that device to a different port, other than the one with the lightning bolt in the symbol, you should add a powered USB hub, to help take the power load off of the computer's built in USB hubs.
You may find this of use to see the different symbols for the ports: Identify USB 3.0 & Charging Ports By Looking At The Symbols Next To Them - addictivetips.com
I hope this helps.

I don't think so. It seems like anything I plug in to that port causes this
error message & problem. that suggests it's not any particular cable, either.
The 2 USB 3.0 ports have no symbols at all next to them. They are blue
(which is another sign of USB 3).
I believe the USB card in this system is this device:

Is it always the same device you are testing on those USB ports and if so what type of device is it?

Sorry, I've had travel and some other kind of failure on this machine which
has prevented me from replying.
I haven't resolved the new problem yet.
Concerning this problem, everything on that particular USB 3.0 port causes the
"power surge" error message. I haven't found any device that will not cause it.
