Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

You've been helpful with my earlier questions, maybe someone can help me with this.

I have recently been persuaded to convert from Windows 8 to Windows 10   Fine, in many ways, but problems arise.   One fairly serious one is that very many of my files were created and saved in Microsoft Works and I now find that Windows 10 won't run Works.   I still have my Works installation disk but it soon grinds to a halt.

Is there any way to access or convert and re-save these files?   I use OpenOffice (in lieu of Word) but haven't been able to do the "load with" swap to OpenOffice although some simple files can download to Notepad.

The link I gave you has some OpenOffice related and other suggestions on ways to convert files to be readable by OpenOffice. Of course it included using some methods that are not available to you. Just bypass those and look at the others. It suggested variants on OpenOffice that have the ability to open and convert the files as well as some online resources.

Hi there @BrianJoyce,

Welcome back to the HP Support Forums!  I understand that you tried to install MS Works in Windows 10, but it would not install and now you are looking for help with converting your MS Works files.  I am happy to help with this.

Since you are using OpenOffice, I did a little searching and found this: How can I open Microsoft Works wordprocessor files (.wps)? -wikiopenoffice.org. It has some suggestions of methods you could use, including other OpenOffice variants that are capable of opening MS Works files.

Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

I just went to How can I open Microsoft Works wordprocessor files (.wps)? as I think you suggested but couldn't really follow the ideas therein.  I have the impression that it assumes I have Works available but that's the problem.   Windows 10 won't let me instal MSWorks.

Though rather labouriously, I can open simple text Works files into Notepad but spreadsheets and such are not available that way .

Further to my last reply, I can get at some of the Works files through Word but I have not purchased that system, hence my preferred use of OpenOffice.   This means that, apart from reading the Works material, I cannot do anything with it, such as copy , delete or amend any of it.

Again, thanks for your interest.   However, after some more research and advice I have found a very acceptable solution.   I   downloaded and installed LibreOffice, much like OpenOffice, but which does quite happily open those MSWorks files.   It was easily and quickly installed and I would recommend it for anyone else with similar problems.

  Cheers,

     Brian
