HP Envy 32 Monitor
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Quite simply, I turn down the brightness in the OSD, click Save and Return. And then before you know it the brightness is back at 100 which is blinding at night and hard on the eyes.

What is causing this?

I use the monitor in Gaming mode, with Freesync enabled. Does this require or necessitate a switch to full brightness?

Situations to replicate:

  • Turn monitor off and on using the remote
  • If I turn down the brightness, click save and return the brightness reduces. But then if I go back into the Brightness settings and just click cancel then it restores to full brightness even when I'ved saved previously
  • Restart Computer

As I understand you are having issues with Auto brightness on your Monitor. Don't worry as I have a few steps to help you get through this concern,

Let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard Reset

Next thing, I would suggest here is to start with updating the Graphics drivers, Bios, from the support website.

Also, update the Freesync drivers from this support site.

Let me know how this goes.

I hope you have a good day ahead,

Thanks Jeet

I have installed the latest version of HP MyDisplay from my screen's support page (the only download available). This appears to have "fixed" the brightness saving problem but introduced a new problem related to FreeSync.

After installing HP MyDisplay, as when I first got the monitor,  I had to use the physical buttons on the monitor to turn on Gaming Mode in hp Quick View as the only way to enable AMD FreeSync support and then see the "AMD FreeSync On" display on the monitor which switches the display to 100% brightness. I can then turn down the brightness to 50% and save the settings, which then creates a "Custom" hp Quick View profile, but still allows AMD FreeSync to remain enabled in AMD Radeon Settings.

I launched a game of Star Wars Battlefront which seemed to play fine with AMD FreeSync enabled, but after quitting the game, I received an "AMD FreeSync Off" message, and it can no longer be enabled under the AMD Radeon Settings unless switching back to Gaming mode under HP Quick View, which then reverts to 100% brightness.

If I am left with the choice between blinding brightness or AMD FreeSync as my only options then I might consider returning the monitor. Is this really the case?

Hi @HandSlander,

You're welcome. I understand you are having a new issue after updating the drivers for your graphics cards and the Bios. Don't worry as I have a few other steps to help you with this.

  1. Open the AMD Catalyst Control Center.
  2. Place a check mark next to Enable under AMD FreeSync technology for DP Adaptive Sync.
  3. Click Apply.

I'm sorry mate but I don't know what you are talking about... you are using old information - Catalyst doesn't exist anymore.

Can you please refer me to someone from HP Tech department?

Hi @HandSlander,

Thanks for replying. Since this is an issue with AMD Freesync, I would suggest you contact AMD tech support for further assistance.

Thanks & Regards,

Its not Freesync that's the issue - its the HP monitor not allowing brightness changes while retaining the ability to use FreeSync.

This is an HP product related issue.

Hi@HandSlander,

Thanks for the response.

I would like to share some steps to perform monitor reset in order to fix the issue you have.

I request you to perform the reset on the monitor and check if that solves the issue.

I believe it’s not the driver issue. Since you have mentioned that you changed the brightness in OSD and even then, it got changed.

The reset should ideally restore the firmware of the monitor back again. Hoping for a good result.

Hope the information shared will help you. Please share for more.
