Color Laaser Jet Pro MFP M277d
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

How do I clear a "Supply Memory Error" on my M277 dw.  I'm using Windows 8.1.  I can't believe HP is doing this to us by making us buy HP cartriges.  I guess they can't stand the competition.  I'm about ready to junk this printer and buy a different brand!

I'm still getting this error after installing the latest firmware (datecode 20160921) from http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/HP-Color-LaserJet-MFP-M277-series/7089945/mo...

I had the exact same issue and also resolved it successfully by downgrading the firmware.
However there's one major drawback: The old firmware has a big wifi / AirPrint stability problem. After a short time, the printer seems to be disconnected and I can't print from any of our Macs. Switching the printer off and on again or disabling and reactivating AirPrint on the web interface makes it work again.

But I rather live with that instead of being unable to use 3rd party toners.

Can we please have an official statement by HP wether this update was intendend to blacklist 3rd party toners? You made a public statment regarding the OfficeJets and bowed to the public outcry  but no word about the LaserJets.

I saw that there's a new firmware listed (20160921), but again no statement to the 3rd party toner situation in the release notes. I'm for sure not giving it a try as I wouldn't be surprised if you quietly blocked the possibility of downgrading with this release - that's the trust you gained in the light of your latest actions. So if you want your customers to do any firmware updates in the future you should start COMMUNICATING. I do see several security patches in the release notes so if you want to prevent your next PR fiasco (something along the lines of "HP printers used by hacker botnet to attack XY") you should do something so that your customers at least consider hitting that update button again. And that's surely not done by saying nothing...

I have an HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M277dw.  Two and a half months ago I recieved a notice on my printer screen to update my firmware.  So, of course, I pressed yes.  After downloading the firmware my printer immediately displayed a message saying "Supply memory error" in the yellow  and magenta.  I am using after market toner units.  Someone on one of the forums suggested downloading an earlier versin of the firmware "20150716Apr 21, 2016, but HP has removed it from their website.  Please HP, I have no printer.  Please respond.  Thanks, JIm

Hi Jim!
You can get the windows release here: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL62137/kj-149900-2/M277_MFP_Series_FW_Update-20150716.exe

Mac release is here: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL62140/kj-149905-2/M277_MFP_Series_FW_Update-20150716.dmg

I wasn't able to downgrade using my Mac with Sierra but the tftp method describer here worked fine: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01711356#WinMethod_RFU_FTP_browser

You first need to extract the firmware from the installer. Open (mount) the dmg, right click on "HP Firmware Update" and choose "Show package contents". Navigate to Contents/Resources/Firmwares/phx.HpFirmware/Contents/Resources and copy the phx.rfu file to your desktop.

You need to allow downgrading somewhere in the printer settings menu and enable tftp using the printer's webinterface. Then you can just connect to the printer using some FTP client (e.g. FileZilla), transfer the phx.rfu file to the printer and you should see the downgrade process on the printer's display and happily use your 3rd party toners after the downgrade finished.

The download supplied by HP has failed.  Any other suggestions?

It works on my side. Paste the URL in windows explorer or safari (which then opens finder) on a Mac. Chose guest on the login dialog and the download should start.
If that doesn't work connect to the URL with an FTP client such as FileZilla. You might need to connect to ftp.hp.com/pub first and navigate your way to the right folder by following the URL above.
