my laptop will not boot into windows. it tries to start up but then says it is repairing some files or something like that then it just goes blank. the mouse and touch screen works but no desktop comes up. I ran the system test from the bios and get :
"HD short DST check failed- Error code: 9GFA21-7P88KU-MFPWL1-60T903" I have no idea what this error code means and cannot find out what it means ANYWHERE! Where can I find out what is wrong with my laptop using this error code? Also one more thing, the warrenty just expired 5 days ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The files to recover Windows is/was on the failed hdd. You have/had software to make backup Recovery Media. If you did not make it you will need to call HP to order it.

DST check:Failed means the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you were still in warranty HP would replace it (sorry). A retail 2.5" laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Western Digital, Seagate,Toshiba, etc all make good hdd's Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use HP Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

thankyou for your quick response. I was wondering if you knew where I could get a new 500gb hd and about how much they go for? Also, if i were to get a new hd, would i have to purchase the software to restore the laptop? i do not have a restore disk and i am assuming that the restoration software is on my bad hd...

I did not recieve an answer... I was thinking of replacing my harddrive but like I said in my last post, what about the software needed to restore my laptop? Im talking about the software that originally came with the laptop, like windows 8.1 and all the drivers. Is that software stored on a partition on the original hd or could it possibly be in the bios? Where can I get the software?
