It worked, but now wants installation disc

Good to hear it worked Ok.

 

If the power on password just appeared out of the blue, it can indicate that the HDD has failed and this would also be consistent with the error code you mention.

 

You can try checking if this is the case as follows.

 

Shutdown the notebook. 

 

Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ) and run the tests on the Hard Drive.

 

Post back with the results, including any error codes that may be generated.

Can you post back with the following details.

 

The full Model No. and Product No. of your cq71 series notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.

 

The version of the current operating system ( ie Windows 7 64bit etc ).
