So, I'm having an issue that seems to have just started today, out of nowhere, where my laptop seems to not want to exit sleep mode.

So here's how the issue goes: if the laptop is left, you know, inactive for a while, the screen goes black. I'm used to that, that's just what I guess is sleep mode, never really learned the proper term for it, I just call it sleep. Might be standby. But anyways, it's the normal thing where the screen goes black after a short period of inactivity. Normally just moving the mouse or something will make the screen come back and it's all fine.

But, just today, I'm having an issue where the screen doesn't come back. It just stays black, and I've had it happen twice so far (back to back); once where I closed the laptop, and once where I'd just left it alone for a while. In both cases when I returned to try and 'wake it up', the power button's light stops flashing and becomes solid (normal for when waking the computer up), but the screen stays black.

Now both times I've been able to get the normal display back but hard restarting, just by holding down the power button. But obviously, as it happened a second time, that offered no permanent change. And I've checked 'hybrid sleep' or whatever, and that's off. So I'm not sure what's happening, or why it started so suddenly.

I understand that you are having an issue with Sleep Mode, and wanted to assist you!  I see that the issue started recently, and you are not sure why.

To start, can you provide me with the Product Number of the notebook?  Here is a link you can use that will help you find your Model and Product Number:

It is possible that a driver update may have caused the issue.  Do you recall any updates recently?  Have you tried performing a System Restore, to set the notebook back to its previous working state?  If you are still having trouble, try reviewing the following document, and let me know how it goes: HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 😎

I have no idea how to find out what model of Pavilion I have, short of going through the entire list. But I tried System Restore, and it seemed to have no effect.

Mostly I'm curious as to potential hardware problems.

As mentioned in my previous post, you can use the link here: HP Customer Support - Products

That link will help you find the Product Number for the notebook.  Also, what were the results of the document I provided in my previous post?  I am referring to this one:

It seemed to end up being a problem with the BIOS as I updated the driver for that and the laptop is fine now.
