Hi there ,
Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.
To have the best experience on HP forum, you can also visit our HP Forums Guide to know more.
I understand that you want to know about the HDD compatibility for the secondary drive slot on your Envy 17 j053.
As per the Manual for Envy 17, the secondary drive slot supports up to 1-TB 5400rpm SATA HDD and up to 300GB SSD HDD.
You can view the Manual by clicking here : HP Envy 17 Manual .
Please note that not every Envy 17 Laptop Model comes with a secondary SSD slot.
If ever you plan to upgrade or purchase a Secondary Hard drive, please check if you can install an SSD Hard drive first.
Hope this helps. Have a great day.
Cheers!!

Thanks for the reply. i see the manual states a 160gb and 300 gb ssd. Does it need to be specifically one of those 2 sizes? Would i be able to use a bigger size ssd? Not very clued up with these technical bits!
Cheers.
