Can I upgrade RAM in HP Envy DV7 7255 DX

I have an HP Envy DV7 7255 DX, and I'm looking to updrade the amount of RAM substantially. I'm not sure if I can even upgrade it, and if I can upgrade, how much more I can put in. Here are the curent specs:

Notebook Product #: C6N73UA#ABA

Curent RAM: 6gb DDR3 SDRAM (2 DIMM)

Slot 1: 2GB  Samsung 1600MHz

Slot 2: 4GB  Samsung 1600MHz

I would like to, at the very minimum, replace the current 2 gb stick with a 4gb (the same as the current 4gb in there), to have a total of 8gb. I would also consider though, replacing both slots with 8gb sticks for a total of 16gb. It looks like my operating system is fine with that, just not sure if the mother board would be able to use it. (IE: I dont want to put in more than can be used, and just waste the money on it, if 8gb is the max).

I recently installed Avid editing software and it says I need a minimum of 8gb to make it run effeciently. I also have Virtual PC installed to run a shadow XP drive for old software I still use, and I've noticed a significant lag in everything done in windows 8.1 while Virtual drive is concurrently running. I suspect it might be also related to not enough RAM.

Bottom line: Is it possible to upgrage the amount of RAM, and if so, how much can I upgrade it? Thanks in advance for your help.   🙂

Awesome. Thanks for the quick and detailed replt, Carlos. I think I'm going to max it out and go with two 8gb sticks. One other thing I happened to thing of: do you think there would be any issue with more heat being generated with using higher capacity RAM? Or would it actually be the opposite considering it wouldn't be working as hard?

I understand that in the certified modules as the original HP or Kingston, manufacturers already considered that parameter, so it is very unlikely to 16 GB  warm much more than 6 GB original.
