I am looking at buying a HP Notebook - 15-ay117cl. I would like to be able to upgrade the hardrive to an SSD drive, but I have been having a lot of trouble finding what SSD drives are compatible. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have had previous experience with the Samsung 850 EVO SSD drives and like them - would one of these be an option?
What is the difference between the drives that come in a solid case and those that come looking like a circuit board?
Thank you!

See p. 60 of the Manual here:
Simply stated: yes, you can install the Samsung 850 Evo in the link you provide. It is a 2.5 inch SATA SSD which as stated by @banhien above is pretty much identical in shape and size to a regular hard drive. Remove the hard drive and put the SSD in its place.
Your laptop is also capable of using one of the "circuit board" drives you ask about but only the M.2 SATA type. Frankly, these things are pretty complicated and if you are comfortable with the 850 Evo (which also happens to be my "go to" 2.5 inch SATA SSD) stick with that. The 2.5 inch SATA SSDs are just as fast as the M.2 SATA type drives. The only advantage of the M.2 is that you can have it plus a regular HDD or 2.5 inch SSD.

Hi,
Yes, Samsung would be fine. There are few standard forms/types of SSD's:
(a) The first form/type is very similar to normal HDD's, same length, same width, only the height (or thickness) is lower a bit but they will fit to HDD slots. This could be like a box as you see them.
(b) The second form/type called PCIe/M.2 they won't fit to normal HDD slots they may have different lenghts
(c) Other form/type also called PCIe but normally we can't use for laptops.

Thank you for the response, but I am still confused. Perhaps my question was not clear. If I get the laptop mentioned above, can I put this SSD in it? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E500B-AM/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=...
