The first thing you are going to need is the Service manual:

Service manual

According to official specs you have a single 8 gig DIMM and you have an i7 processor so two slots.

Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM in the following conƭgurations ● 16384-MB total system memory (8192×2)

So, no support for 16 gig modules; have to use 8 gig maximum size

Memory module (DDR3L-1600): 8-GB 693374-005

https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1600MHz-PC3-12800-KVR16LS11/dp/B00CQ35HBQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=U...

Above would work.

See p. 42. You have hit the nail on the head. Memory removal is far too difficult to allow end users to do it. Requires motherboard removal. But HP sources have confirmed to Experts here that the warranty will be honored if you can do the work as perfectly as an HP technician. If you mess it up, you are on your own which seems fair to me.

Hi,

Probably you alesady read the book, it clearly says

Two SODIMM slots - non customer accessible / non-upgradeable
DDR3L-1600 Dual Channel Support
Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM in the following configurations:
● 16384-MB total system memory (8192×2)
● 12288-MB total system memory (8192×1) + (4096×1)
● 8192-MB total system memory (8192×1) or (4096×2)
● 4096-MB total system memory (4096×1) or (2048×2)

For the secon question: non customer accessible / non-upgradeable simply means you can't upgrade yourself. The true story is you need an HP Authorized Service Provider parts to do this work for you otherwise HP may not honor warranty.

Regards.

Why is it not upgradable? Is the memory soldered in?

What is in there now 1 8gb or 2 fours?

Is one of the slots blocked by a chip that is soldered?

I would have never bought it if I knew u can't increase the memory

Hi,

>>> Is the memory soldered in?

In many cases no, then it is upgradable BUT not from customers

>>> What is in there now 1 8gb or 2 fours?

Currently it has 8GB in one slot

>>> Is one of the slots blocked by a chip that is soldered?

As 1 above.

>>> I would have never bought it if I knew u can't increase the memory

I used to replace/add RAM, HDD, SSD in around 5 minutes BUT new design I may have to spend hours and hope no damages for machines. Again customer can't do BUT machine is upgradable.

Note: If out of warranry, you can upgrade yourself and if anything broke, you are on your own.

Thanks very much for your replies,

Still not quite sure why it is not upgradeable but I'll try it. Is it just because you have to remove so many pieces to get to the memory that there is static risk on frying the boards while handling?

1. thanks for the link, It doesn't say how many dimm slots are there I assume there are two i never heard of a single slot before. Can you confirm the number of slots please?

2. What about 16gb  DDR3L SDRAM, they are readily available now is there just a bios limitation preventing me from putting one 16 in or for that matter 2x16?

thx for the help i want find out as much as possible and order the parts before dissassembling this.
