HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

To Whom it May Concern,

Good day, all. I am currently experiencing issues charging my HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13. I noticed this first when charging in my apartment when I received a standard low battery message while my laptop was plugged in. I checked the battery status in the bottom-right corner of the screen and saw that it read something along the lines of "plugged in, but not charging," which is a message that I have not seen before.

Naturally, after confirming every plug was completely inserted into where it was needed, I switched outlet ports and then, eventaully, different rooms. Now that I am experiencing the same issues in my school library, I can confirm that the outlet itself (the power source) is not the issue here. Currently, my laptop is plugged in but is not charging normally. Charge is storing unusually slow, and as I am currently in final examinations at university, cannot run the risk of waiting to see what happens.

After plugging in, my charger is warm, which means that it is functioning (I'm not an electrical engineer, so please do not take my word for it). Also, I had my battery replaced by a reputable source (my previous one died and my laptop would not run unless plugged in) and for a few months now, its been running perfectly. I make sure to not "overcharge" (whether it's a myth or not) my laptop battery and I only plug it in for as long as its needed to reach 100% and no more.

Does anyone have any ideas, solutions, tips or tricks as to how I might solve this issue? I have found a page on this forum which involves running diagnostics, re-installing a driver, and removing the laptop battery before restarting, but since my laptop is very thin and they made it difficult to remove the battery (for me, a lad with zero experience in fixing issues but much expereince in creating them), I decided to consult this forum first before potentitally destroying my device.

Thanks in advance and all the best to anyone who took the time to read this.

Hi @RedSoxJSS,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the battery is not getting charged and you are getting plugged in not charging message.

I’d love to help!

Follow the below steps to fix this issue.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager.

Here is how you do it.

Step 1: Click the Windows “Start” button and right-click “Computer.”

Step 2: Click “Manage,” then “Device Manager.”

Step 3: Click the “Batteries” section. A list of devices will appear.

Step 4: Right-click the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” device and click “Uninstall.”

Step 5: Click the “Action” menu item and “Scan for Hardware Changes” to reinstall the driver.

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

If the issue persists, I recommend you update the bios the from the below link and test.

Hi,

Thank you for posting those two solutions. Unfortunately, neither of them worked for me.  Right now, I no longer received the "Plugged in but not charging" message; however, when I plug in, it will say (plugged in, charging), but the charge will not go up. In fact, the charge often goes down.

If I unplug my charger and then plug it back in, it will charge normally for a few seconds (with the battery icon performing its normal animation, depicting the filling up of the battery), and then it will quit charging (with the battery icon showing that it's plugged in but still, so it's not depicting that the battery is filliing up) and the battery charge will either not change or go down. If I continue to unplug and plug in the charger from my computer, it will eventually not even register that it is plugged in at all and I will need to unplug and plug in the charger from the wall.

If I turn off the laptop and plug it in, the external light will turn amber, saying that it is charging, but no matter how much time later I come back, when I turn on the computer, the charge has not changed.

Do you have any futher advice for me?

Thanks

Hi @RedSoxJSS,

I reviewed the post. It is great to have you back. You've displayed excellent commitment and great technical skills to try and resolve the issue. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 Your time and patience are also greatly appreciated. As @The_Fossette is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf.

For now please try these steps:

  • For further assistance, please follow all the relevant steps that match your current issue from this link: http://hp.care/2syheXK
  • Also, make a note of any failure code for a failed component like the battery or adapter (charger)

If the problem persists, then please check this link out to improve battery performance. There is an associated video included as well. Link HP Notebook PCs - Improving Battery Performance (Windows 10, 8, 7): http://hp.care/2syuGOs

This should do the trick for you.

If your battery or the charger fails, then contact HP phone support to get the computer serviced.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

Also if the issues continue, it could be the battery controllers of your motherboard that might require replacing the motherboard itself. I am not beating around the bush. I am being honest about it.

If the computer is out of warranty for more than 3 years, then please contact a local Best Buy or Staples technician to get it repaired as service options with HP may not be available. This is because the original suppliers and manufacturers of the parts that are supplied to HP don't do so anymore and hence service options are not available.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up "button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this asAccepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

I called HP about this matter that adapter is connected but not charging they told me to disconnect the power cable adapter and hold power on/off button from 40 to 60 second. now let the button go and connect the adapter and boom it started working.

Holding the power button while unplugged for at least 60 seconds worked for me as well.  such an easy fix.. thanks much!

Tried a few recommendations from other forums but they didn't work.

Tried this as my last resort and BAM! Worked like a charm.

Thank you!

The only thing that worked for me was holding the power button for 60 seconds while computer was unplugged.  Had tried every other possible solution.  I'm glad it worked, but this sure is a stupid problem.  Third time for me on this machine, and second straight Windows 10 PC with this problem (though the fix was different on the previous one - different manufacturer).

This solution just worked for me now. So simple and so effective!
Thanks a lot

Tried the above but it didn't work, I've tried two new batteries and all I get when I plug in

the battery the icon shows charging for about 15 sec. then stops, and all it tells me is that it is plugged in and nothing else. This is what it tells me Power mode (plugged in) that's it.

I've tested the battery, it's good

Tested the power supply, it's good

Done all the hold in the start button,  delete Microsoft AC adapter, and delete Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery.

Any other ideas?
