HP ENVY 15 notebook

Hello!

I seem to have a broken hard drive, atleast it seems that way. I only have had it for about 6 months (warrenty ended after I got this new harddrive from HP, which broke after about half a year).

Now i got a black screen on boot, did a quick harddrive test from the bootmenu and it quickly gave me error code "RK5MA2-6LU8kF-MFGJWK-60SE03" (about 10 to 20 seconds into the test). I can't find anything on this error.

My question is, is this the harddrive that crashed and will be easily fixed by getting a new harddrive, or is it more? Maybe something in the motherboard/connection between the harddrive and the motherboard, or something completely different. And how will I know that if I buy a new harddrive, it won't be dead within half a year, again.

Thanks in advance!

Johan Odijk.

It is a little unusual to have 2 hdd's die within a year but not unheard of. Does your notebook often operate under heavy load generating a lot of internal heat? Heat is a killer. I try to use a laptop cooling pad under mine most of the time and when using without one I always make sure the air vents are not obstructed.

The one bright side to replacing the hdd with a retail hdd is that you will have a 3-5 year warranty, depending on model you choose. For instance most Western Digital Blue have a 3 yr and Westren Digital Black have a 5yr warranty. Any of the other models you look check warranty specs.

All you need to know is the hard drive is bad and needs replaced. Since this is the second bad hard drive in a year, there may be something else going on which could range from some usage habit the owner has which is tough on the hard drive all the way to a motherboard issue.

So this is a quandry. I think we know that if you buy a new hard drive it will work fine at least for a while but without knowing if there is anything else going on it is impossible to predict if it will happen again. I would go in and run a full hardware scan in the UEFI diagnostics (F2 as you power up) and see if any hardware other than the hard drive tests bad. If not I would go ahead and install a new hard drive if for no other reason than third time should be a charm, we can hope, and a hard drive is a fraction the cost of a new laptop.
