I am searching for the specification to upgrade the RAM to 16GB for my HP Notebook - 15-ay012dx (ENERGY STAR). currently my notebook is running on 4GB which is throttling many programs. Can someone please let me know if i need to go for DDR3 or DDR4, and what speeds are supported for my laptop.

According to the P/N # you shared this is the specs it pulls up

according to this you have a 4 GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB) memory so it's DDR3

Page 2 : has the supported memory info, Depending on the Processor on your PC it's either DDR3 or DDR4

I went through the document. But i am not sure on if my laptop comes under DDR3 category or DDR4 as it have gen 7 processor mentioned init and my laptop is on gen6.  Can you please let me know if my laptop comes under DDR3 or DDR4?

in that case please help me with the product number of ur PC, it'll be at the back of the PC or in the battery case on the PC, so that i can check the correct info for you
