HP 17-x024ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I want to update my laptop with an SSD. It's a HP 17-x024ng model W6Y05EA-ABD

Is this possible and is there a manual how to do it?

Thanks

Hi,

thank you for the information - I expected something like this.

Meanwhile I ordered a caddy for M.2 SSD as optical drive replacement:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Rainbow-Laptop-2nd-Driver-Caddy-M-2-NGFF-SSD-To-Slim-SATA-For-9-5mm-...

...because I don't want to lose the big HDD as mass storage and the SSD (as you said) will only be SATA in any case. The optical drive is needed rarly and I still have another Laptop in case I need to insert a CD/DVD somewhere.

...delivery time "only" 26-54 days 😉

So, thank you for investigating!

Yes. You can install an M.2 2280 SATA-3 SSD  in your notebook. Use a PCIe (TLC) type. I am unsure if the NVMe spec M.2 SSD will work in your notebook.  Use an SSD that has at least 256 GB storage capacity.

Use the FRU remove and replace video at the following link.

See the manual at the following URL:

Hi,

thank you so far. I bought the following: SAMSUNG 850 EVO SSD M.2 2280 250GB intern SED SATA 6Gb/s from here https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00TGIVZTW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But after I opened my Laptop 17-x024ng I found no M.2 port!!!

And I don't want to replace my HDD! Maybe replacing the optical drive would be OK but then I would need some kind of adapter and it's being said that connecting an SSD to the optical drive or HDD port does not give you the performance you would expect from an SSD - so it makes no sense to install one.

Have I missed something?

Thank you

See page 51 of the manual that I provided a link to.

If you have the 17" notebook that you provided the product name for there is an M.2 slot.

It does require quite a bit of disassembly to get to the M.2 slot.

Watch the video labelled SSD to see where the M.2 slot is.

Hi, I watched the video a lot of times and also read the manual page 51...but the place were the SSD is located in the video and manual is fully occupied by the HDD drive.

In the video you can see during the first seconds were they disassambling the cover of the notebook my version but after 20 seconds when they switch to the closer detailed view of the SSD it's suddenly a different model!

Right to their SSD are the RAM memory slots. But left to it is my HDD covered by a black gummi protector...the same as you can see in the video during the first seconds. It's directly "under" where the optical drive would be.

Stop the video after 16 seconds where the cover is unmounted and you can see the whole opened notebook...where is the M.2 slot? It's not there! It's exactly as my version.

With the notebook opened, can you take a photo of the bottom of the notebook and post it here?

All of the 17-x000 series notebook are shown as having compatibility for an M.2 SSD. It is interesting that from what  you are saying that yours does not have a slot for it. It is not an impossibility that it was somehow missed during QA and not installed.

Is the SSD connector present?

The following image shows what it looks like.

I will post an image this evening but you can already see it how it is if you click the video which is named "Hard disk drive (17.3 inch model)".

For me this looks like the 17-x either have the HDD or the M.2 slot (board).

Even if the M.2 board is missing then I should see the connector for the ribbon cable but there are no "empty" connectors.

Thanks for the images.

I watched the video.

you removed the hard disk to see if  the M.2 connector board is underneath?

I will ask my internal contacts about this?
