Envy m7-k211dx
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

(Hope I'm in the correct section for this question).

System is Envy m7-k211dx that came with Win 8.1 and was automaticaly upgraded to Win 10.  Been using it a little over a year and as far as I know all works correctly.

Am making the system dual boot to a 2nd OS which is Win 7-64 Ultimate.  That has completed and works just fine - except for 1 little issue.

In Win 7 the Device Manager shows a little yellow error exclamation point at a device called 'PCI Simple Communications Controller'.  Checking properties says that no driver is installed for this device.  It shows it is bus 0, device #22.  Under properties/Details/Hardware IDs that shows VEN 8086 and DEV 9CBA.  I beleive that tracks back to the Intel MEI - Management Engine Interface driver.

Going to the hp.com driver support page for the m7-k211dx, I downloaded and installed sp66098. Or at least I tried.  Shortly after starting to install it comes back with the error message: 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements to install the software'.

It seems that it is unlikely the problem is hardware related since HP has put up W7 drivers for download and it runs perfectly fine in the W10 boot.  So I suspect there is some SW related issue that is causing the install to think the computer does not meet minimums.

Any idea on how to find what is causing the install to fail?

Hi:

The installation is failing because the driver's setup information file does not contain support for the hardware ID you posted.

Here is a partial copy and paste of that file...so that answers why.

[Intel.ntamd64.6.1]
; DisplayName               Section           DeviceId
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E3A
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1CBA
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C3A
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1DBA
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1D3A
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C3A
%TEE_DeviceDesc%=TEE_DDI_x64, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9C3A

So, we have to find the right driver that has support for the ID you posted.

See if this driver works.  Its setup information file does contain driver support for the ID you posted.

Paul,

That seemed to work.  The install went right through with no problems, the yellow exclamation point is gone and I found the Intel MEI under systems devices at bus 0, device 22 and the text said the device had a driver and was working correctly.

Many THANKS!

You're very welcome.

BTW, the hp site downloads sp66098 for Win 7-64 for the m7-k211dx laptop instead of sp71258.  Maybe that should be changed?

I'll ask someone from the HP forum administration team to see if they get HP technical support to replace the non working driver with the working one.

The driver I posted just adds support for additional versions of the IMEI hardware, so any m7-kxxx, even if it has older hardware, the newer driver should work for those models as well.
