HP M6-K0015DX Sleekbook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Problem: Laptop shuts off without warning while running, but ONLY when unplugged. When it's plugged in, everything runs fine. After it dies, the only way to start it back up again is to plug in AC power. When it is unplugged, it lasts for an indeterminable amount of time, and then dies again whenever it feels like.

Failed Solutions:

  • I've checked the battery diagnostics window (F2 during startup), and it tells me that the status of the battery is "OK" with more than 60% charge capacity. While the charge capacity could be better, I see no reason why it would cause the laptop to randomly shut off.
  • I've changed the battery settings to ensure it does not sleep at a certain battery % level.
  • I've updated the BIOS & all drivers
  • I ran anti-virus and anti-malware solutions (multiple times across multiple softwares)
  • I performed a system restore to a date on which I was not having the problem

Nothing has worked.

My best guess is that the battery itself is fried, yet I'm not really sure how or why. I have no problem purchasing a new battery and replacing it, but I want to make sure my money is going towards the right solution.

Hi @baja695, and welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand the battery for your notebook is not functioning quite right. I see that the notebook shuts off with no notice as if to have lost power and in order to restart you need to connect the AC adapter. Based on your description of the issue and what you have tried it does sound like, despite the test result, the battery has failed.

Before you go ahead a replace the battery, I was thinking that calibrating it might help. Please use the following document for instructions to calibrate: HP Notebook PCs - Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 10).
