Accessing the user panel on the back of the laptop reveals the Wifi card and the system RAM. There is a 4gb stick of RAM which I assume is factory installed. On the adjoining section, next to the RAM already in place, is an area which appears to be capable of receiving another stick of RAM. However, this area does not have the slot to plug the RAM into, and the brackets on either side to keep it locked down. Is this correct, or is it a factory defect? Having another 4gb of RAM would be worthwhile.

On the Baytrail processor models like your Celeron N series, there is only a single memory slot presumably to keep the price as low as possible. The traces are there but not the actual memory slot as you have seen. You can install an 8 gig module in that slot to have 8 gigs total.

Thank you very much! I did try installing a 8gb stick of RAM in the one and only legitimate slot and it wasn't recognized. But quite possibly it was not exactly the correct RAM for that motherboard.

That is true. Compatibility can be tricky. Can you give us the identification on the module of what you tried to install?
