I have two ProBook 4440s Core I5 computers, one with an optical drive, the other without. Without opening the case, is there any way to tell whether the one with the optical drive deletion cover plate has an internal connection to which I could connect a second hard drive using a caddy?

Remove the plate, shine a light in there and see if you see a mini-SATA connection at the end of the tunnel. I believe all the motherboards in that series have a port for an optical drive.

You were correct -- it does indeed have an internal drive connection. I now have 1TB second hard drives in both 4440s laptops, since I already own an external CD ROM drive for the few times per year I need one. Adding a large second hard drive is a pretty cheap and quick way to upgrade one of these laptops, both of which I had already upgraded with 8K RAM sticks.
