Hello,
I'm writing to ask which (if any) processors my specific motherboard/bios will support that aren't listed in the Manual.
Laptop:
HP Pavilion dv7 Entertainment PC (circa Q4 2009)
Pavilion dv7-3085dx
Motherboard: VM188UA - p/n 575477-001 with 1GB GT 230M GPU
Intel i7-720QM p/n 586170-001
Processors listed in Maintenance and Service Guide (575975-001):
i7-720QM - p/n 586170-001
i7-820QM - p/n 583053-001
I'm fairly certain they will physically fit in the socket, but does anyone know if my motherboard can support any of the other "clarksfield" mobile CPUs:
i7-740QM
i7-840QM
i7-920XM
i7-940XM
I have my eye on a 920XM or 940XM, but with their cost I need to make sure the motherboard will at least boot to my OS. I'm also not worried about thermal issues as the motherboard is no longer located inside the original laptop case (don't ask lol), and has plenty of cooling.
Thanks!

Hi @uswg01,
Thanks for posting your question in the HP Community. It is a terrific place to find answers and tips from experts in the community. I reviewed your post and understand that you need information regarding processor upgrades. It will be a pleasure to assist you.
A commendable job was done by attempting it before posting your question in the HP forums. It is always a great pleasure to work with technically competent customers like you. Kudos to you for that.
We definitely value your relationship with HP tremendously. We appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.
You’ve done your research copiously. Great job. Going by the product specs from the service maintenance guide, the listed processors are the only ones compatible with the computer. So nothing else will be compatible as this is an older computer.
Item Description Spare Part Number
i7-820QM processor (1.73-GHz, SC turbo up to 3.06-GHz) 583053-001
i7-720QM processor (1.60-GHz, SC turbo up to 2.80-GHz) 586170-001

Please note that HP does not recommend upgrading either the operating system or the computer’s hardware as the components that were initially installed with the unit are certified by HP for optimal performance. T
However, as you are very technically inclined, I would still request you to consult a local Best Buy or Staples technician before proceeding to upgrade the unit.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Trust me I have done all I can to help by keeping your best interest in mind. Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead.
