A friend recommended me to upgrade the RAM (they said I could to improve the performance) but I am not sure if that's true or if it is, how to go about it. Any guidance would greatly be appreciated.

Yes, you can install another 8 GB DDR3L-1600 memory chip in the available empty memory slot.
See chapter 1 of the service manual for the memory upgrade information:
Chapter 5 has the memory removal and replacement procedure.
This should be a compatible 8 GB memory chip to install:
Crucial RAM 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz CL11 Laptop Memory CT102464BF160B at Amazon.com
