To piggyback off this. Have a bc251nr, will an m.2 pcie nvme ssd work?

Yes you can add M.2 PCIe NVMe 2280 TLC SSD.
The one you linked should work good. Make it as boot drive and use 1TB HDD for storage
Create HP recovery USB before any upgrade using HP Recovery Manager.
