Here is my problem, I want to play minecraft on decent fps. I love this laptop and don't want to buy a new one, even if it is more $$ to buy parts than the laptop is worth. I love the feel, the look, and the size of this one. So my question is, could I buy a better cpu or more ram that would help with MC? I know I can't upgrade the graphics, because I assume like most laptops, it is directly soldered to the motherboard. What about ordering a higher end motherboard from a better model in the same family as this one? I am desperate lol, please help!

Hi @jmiller634,

Terrific description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you with it. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂
I will provide the service and maintenance guide link and the product specifications link for the maximum ram supported along with the part numbers for compatible ram modules for the computer Click here for the service guide. Refer Page19, 39 for compatible ram modules.
- Also, the type of CPU that is compatible with the computer along with the motherboard list.
- For CPUs refer to page 1 and 2 and page 18
- For supported motherboards refer to page 47.
- All these may not be compatible. You need to check with a local technician as to which part is compatible based on your current configuration. (Intel or AMD motherboards, chipset and processors)
- Please go through the complete service manual for more information regarding the HDD and solid state drive also.
- According to the product specifications of the computer, the maximum supported memory is 16 GB. click here for product specs
- Memory Max
- Maximum supported = 16GB
Note: - Please note that HP does not recommend upgrading either the operating system or the computer’s hardware as the components that were initially installed with the unit are certified by HP for optimal performance. However, as you are very technically inclined, I would still request you to consult a local technician like Best Buy or Staples before proceeding to upgrade the unit.
So please contact a local Best Buy or staples technician and perform the upgrade so that there are no compatibility issues with the processor, ram or motherboard for your computer and everything works smoothly.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

And here is more of the problem. You already have the top of the line processor for the model series, an A10-5745M. There is no real upgrade possible. You could install 8 gigs of memory easily and a solid state drive and it would make the computer generally more responsive but would make little improvement in any kind of gaming.
