I haven't built a computer in about 12 years and haven't ever touched a laptop... my wife bought the 15-au010wm for games and I want to upgrade the gpu and ram just not sure what ram an how much I can use in this, and want some thing better than the geforce 940mx can anyone help me out

The gpu upgrade is not really possible. The video chip is soldered to the motherboard and not removeable or replaceable or upgradeable. Here is the Manual:

 

Manual

 

You have 12 gigs of DDR4-2133 SO-DIMM RAM or an 8 gig and a 4 gig and the max would be 2 x 8 = 16. 12 gig to 16 gig upgrade will have no effect on gaming performance and very little on overall performance. 

 

Your huge performance upgrade would be a solid state drive...the 5400 rpm mechanical "spinner" hard drive is the system bottleneck but SSDs again have almost zero impact on gaming fps.
