You can buy any good branded 2.5 inch SATA 7mm/9.5mm thick hard drive
Western digital, HGST Travelstar are good brands
www.ebay.com/itm/252844236681
Manual: 48-52, easy to do
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02642701
You've to use HP recovery discs to factory reset after replacement. See if 3rd party sellers like computersurgeons are stocking it.
Yes they are: $27
computersurgeons.com/p-21909-windows-7-64b-recovery-kit-630626-002-for-hp-pavilion-entertainment-notebook-pc-model-number-dv7-4177nr.aspx
Else you can also clean install windows 7 if you can clearly read all 25 characters of product activation code in COA sticker pasted on the laptop.

Its been failing for almost a year now. I suppose one day it will just not turn on or do anything? Because of this problem is that why it is slow and sometimes overheats and occasionally gets the blue screen saying it shut down to prevent problem?
So before it has a meltdown I need to backup my computer correct? I get the new install and use the disks is that all that I need to do? Is there more? I have already downloaded the maintenance and repair book for my model on another device.
Thank You
Tina
