I'm in the PC support business. I have had an exceptional number of early failures ( but weeks out of warranty) of Toshiba 2.5" laptop drives in ENVY and Pavilion model laptops. Is there a way to specify Western Digital drives when assisting customers with ordering HP laptops?
Solved! Go to Solution.

Hi, thanks for your information. As Kant mentioned, the Authorised Service providers and the Original service providers do inform HP about abnormal failures. I am an HP employee, and I have passed your concerns to quality management team who is in charge of consumer notebooks.
HP usually supports notebooks a few years after the end of production and tracks their quality perfomance.

Unfortunately, part manufacturers vary and are not selectable when ordering a notebook.

No, it is not possible. In case one of the suppliers shows higher failure rate, HP will stop using it in production.

If it takes discovery by HP to stop use of a component, and these failures are just weeks out of warranty, how would HP find out about the early failures? This has been going on for a long time! Both Toshiba and Hitachi drives before that, service life a little over one year

There are users with extended warranties, out-of-warranty customers, and authorized service partners who still contact HP and provide HP with information regarding failures past the first year.
Hard drive failures would be difficult to track as there are environmental factors involved in premature failure (ie: shock damage) which is why hard drive replacement is the most common repair on notebooks.

If that is the case, is there a place or method by which this early failure could be reported to HP? In my instance, I have experience dating since 1981 to today, have serviced thousands, am qualified to provide useful input, and I am encountering frequent early failures with the Toshiba notebook drives. One would think it useful for HP to hear about that...
