I was in the process of learning how to make recovery media using my old laptop. It said I needed 5GB of space. And would be stored in a file on laptop.
This laptop has no memory.
I think this might be a problem
The laptop I am trying to get running is: 2014 with lots of memory, because it hasn't been used til 1017
model# hp15-1039wm
product #J8X12UAHABA
do not know if if is 32/64 but does say: CPU N2830@2.16ghz
after many bsod messages
auto recovery would load, did system restore , then pc clean up, and finally was in process of factory reset
when reinstalling files, laptop stopped
now it has no boot device and wants an operating system installed
It had windows 8.1, but it has been suggested to get win 10 using media recovery
after reading all the help in forums and community, this seems to be maybe yes you can and maybe no you cannot upgrade from 8.1 to 10
my 2 question: can i use my old laptop to media. if not i will find another way
and, what steps should I take to get my 8.1 laptop running again

1-You can't use Recovery Media created on another machine.
2-The free Windows 10 upgrade program ended July 29,2016.If you upgraded successfully before the deadline you can use the Media Creation tool to make Windows 10 installation.
3-You can also use Media Creation Tool to make a Windows 8.1 installation disk.
