Hello,

I have researched for an explanation or description of what I'm seeing on my laptop.  I have found similar topics but I would like to be sure before I do anything.

A few months ago, a small shadow in the shape of a triangle appeard on the right side of my laptop screen - it was not permanent just on and off.  Sometimes, I would go to Control Panel and adjust the screen resolution and it would be gone.  My screen has been clear for the most part.  I don't remember seeing the shadow at all the past 3 months.

A couple of days ago, the shadow became larger.  I tried again adjusting the screen resolution and the brightness of the screen by clicking on the keyboard keys, but it doesn't seem to work anymore.

Sometimes I listen to the radio online.  If I don't do anything the screen goes blank (not black - laptop is saving energy), then I press something and the screen can be clear, then small shadow, next time clear, then larger shadow....it varies.   If I'm using my laptop otherwise, the shadow doesn't appear on it's own.  It's that moment that I bring the screen up.  When I log in in the morning, the screen is ok.

If the screen is clear, there is a very subtle, like hissing sound coming from the right side of the screen.

In the past, the cover behind the screen on the right side was getting warm.  Not very hot.  The last couple of days that I checked it is not warm anymore.

This evening my screen is not as bright.  It was fine in the morning when I logged in and while using the laptop.  But, as before, bringing the screen up has affected the brightness - sometimes more, sometimes less.  It's not too bad, I can see well.  I tried logging in and closing the cover and opening again.  No improvement.

Is anyone else experiencing this on-and-off-shadows situation?  Can anyone offer their best guess of what's happening?

Regards

Hello,

thanks for taking the time to respond.

My screen is not damaged.  I looked at the photos in the above link and my screen looks nothing like that.  I only have a shadow in the shape of a triangle on the right.  Before it was only the shadow.  The last few of days as soon as the shadow appears, the light of my screen becomes dim.   When I log in, the screen is fine for a while.  Then it gets a bit dark and then darker gradually.

Someone suggested I adjust the power options of my laptop.  He told me to avoid hibernate and sleep but log out when I don't use it.  I tried that hoping that if I give it a break I won't see the shadows.  It looked like it worked for 2 days, but not anymore.

I have called HP but they couldn't help me because my laptop so it's out of warranty now. I'm based in the UK.

He also said something about updating the latest drivers.  I had a look at your site, but I wouldn't know which one to pick for a problem like this.  Does anyone know what drivers would be appropriate?

If anyone here has any suggestions that I could try I'd be grateful.  I'd like to consider and exhaust all options before I pay someone to fix it.

I have checked the Support Assistant and there are no updates suggested for me.  I have also checked the HP site for troubleshooting, but I'm not finding answers to this or perhaps I don't understand them.
