Hi, 

 

I left my laptop (HP Pavilion 15-e072sa / ID E4Q88EA#ABU) idle for a couple of hours and when I came back to it I realized it had frozen (a very unusual behaviour for my laptop). I then tried rebooting it manually by using the switch off button, however it just won't restart. The screen displays the HP logo and either the windows 8 loading screen "rotating dots" or, alternatively, "preparing automatic repair" sign for approx. 2 minutes, then the writing disappears but nothing else happens. I followed the steps recommended in the HP troubleshooting section and ran a system quick test activated by pressing F2 on boot-up. The results are as follows:

 

hard drive SMART check: passed

hard drive short DST check: failed

failure ID: RQF95H-6Q676H-MFPWXG-60T203

 

I have no idea what the above code means but I would like to find out if it is fixable without losing the data stored on my laptop. I've got some important work-related files there that I really need to recover. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

This is NOT official HP Customer Support and I, as most other persons on this forum, do not work for HP. This is a peer-to-peer user supported forum for HP consumer class products. HP maintains no official presence on this forum and it is unlikely that HP will respond in an official capacity. Any reply from a HP employee represents their own opinion and not that of HP's.

 

Sorry, I copied a previous post I had made and failed to delete the portion requesting the HP part number / model name and also the error type. Again... the same information and resolution apply to your situation.

 

A DST failure typically indicates that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail and will need to replaced. After replacing the hard drive, please use the HP Recovery Media you previously created to return the computer to a factory like state.

 

If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, please contact official HP support in your region / country, via the HP Worldwide Support Portalto see if HP Recovery Media is available for your computer.

 

As for the data on the failing drive, remove the drive and place it in USB 2.5" SATA enclosure and connect it to a working computer. If the drive is still accessible, you may be able to copy your work to another computer.

A SMART hard drive error typically indicates that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail and will need to replaced. After replacing the hard drive, please use the HP Recovery Media you previously created to return the computer to a factory like state.

 

If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, please contact official HP support in your region / country, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Media is available for your computer.

The info in red was however utterly unnecessary as I did include the complete model name and product number in my original post. Nowhere in my post did I include my serial number. 

 

Also, the info about the SMART hard drive error - which undoubtedly could be useful to some forum users - did not relate to my problem at all.

 

As much as I appreciate your assistance, I would however recommend more careful reading of the posed questions.

2. Operating System installed (if applicable)
• Example: Windows XP, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit
3. Error message (if any)
• Example: ""Low disk space"" error in Windows
4. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred
• Examples: Upgrading your Operating System or installing a new software; or installing new hardware like a printer, modem, or router.
