I have an HP laptop (15-R136wm) with the standard wifi card (1x1 802.11b/g/n WLAN). I want to purchase a dual band card so I can connect to the 5G band as the 2.4G is weak and intermittent. What would be a great choice for a new card?

We just went through this with another post. The WalMart laptops tend to have budget wireless systems that use an inexpensive wireless card and a single antenna. While the system will accept a higher end wireless card with dual band, it will not work right without 2 antennae.

Page 61 of the Manual shows wireless installation. It is not an easy thing and will jeopardize your warranty. The Manual shows 2 antennae, but we know it is possible, even likely there is only one.

The recent post I am discussing involved an OP buying a dual band card, then he took it to Best Buy where the Geek Squad charged $40 to install the new card, saw that there was only one antenna but proceeded to install the dual band card, anyway. Surprise, it was worse than the old card. I specifically advised as in this post not to do it unless there were 2 antennae.

So what you have to do is open it up first, see whether it has one or 2 antennae. If 2, then you are good to go. You can order this from amazon prime and have it the next day and wait to get it before reassembling. If you see 1 antenna in there close it back up and go on down the road because your wireless can't be made much if any better.

If you have one antenna consider a usb wiress option, unless you are a laptop tech wiz in which case we can discuss adding an antenna. It's a lot of work, but not expensive to do.

Saving $20 generally warrants that you mark it solution so others with the same question do not make the mistake that "other guy" did. Please also post back and tell us what you find.
