Hello - I'm have a similar problem as mentioned earlier.
First off I want to mention that I do not work in the computer science field but have a good understanding of them. I have a friend that contacted me with a problem she was experiencing on her HP G72T-b00 CTO Notebook running Windows 7 Home Premium 64.
When the PC is booting it gets to the HP logo then the screen goes dark. The PC appears to be still booting as normal but there is no display. If I start it up in safe mode it will work fine and the display will continue to work as expected until the PC is shut down and rebooted normal where once the logo is reached the screen goes dark again. I have tried to restore to an earlier point without success in Safe mode. I finally made a backup of her personal data and restored the PC back to factory condition. Once the hard drive format was complete and the OS was reinstalled the PC started to work normal again. I reinstalled her personal information and let the PC connect to updates to install all of the current updates. After sometime it rebooted itself and when it came back up it made it to the logo screen and went dark again. So I started it back up in safe mode and started troubleshooting drivers. I discovered the screen went dark after updating the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Driver for the graphics card. Using the device manager I rolled back the driver then deleted the update from the PC and the screen once again worked normal. So I have discovered what makes the screen go dark but I do not know why it does it. I have noticed the machine that I'm working on is intel and is running the most current version of BIOS (F.48) but the driver associated with the graphics card is AMD based (8.741.1.1000). If I try to install the Intel version (8.15.10.2189 Rev.A) of the driver it will not let me saying it is not supported.
Am I overlooking something - or is there something more I can try?
