HP Spectre x360 13-w023dx

hey, i have an hp spectre x360 13-w023dx that powers on to an administrator/power-on password prompt. gives me three tries, throws me the serial no. and asks me to insert an hp spare key recovery usb, i don't have one, so it shuts down. so on ad infinitum

so what are my options? this laptop has an rtc battery, do i just disconnect and give it a good 30m or is the memory still preserved somewhere else on the laptop? there's no halt code, since it's a newer model

thanks a bunch

Removing the rtc battery rarely works on modern laptops. I would suggest contacting HP for help:

hey there

for anyone who has this problem in the future, i solved it by using another computer and:

downloading the most recent bios update executable for my model on it's support page on hp,

using it to put that bios file on a flash drive,

and putting that flash drive in my spectre and holding WIN + B and the power button for three seconds on start-up

once the bios was flashed there was no more admin password and my computer started fine, so i'm assuming the built-in functionality to update the bios clears the power on password since the password is held in tandem with the bios

you should give it a shot if you find yourself in a similar situation to mine

a lot of earlier models produce a halt code after three enter presses, which you can give to a rep for the right code,

but newer spectre models only give the S/N,

so this should do the trick hopefully

Thanks for posting your solution- though it is all quite strange. Have never seen flashing BIOS clear the password. Have never seen a consumer class laptop make reference to HP Sparekey either.

@REO51ST here is a new one for the research. Wonder if this would work on the (i) models?
