HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

I have been using HP Smart to control scanning from my HP 8720 to my W10 HP Spectre 360 laptop for a year or two.

I can no longer use it to Scan, though printing works OK.    When I invoke the Scan function I get a request to login to HP, submit valid credentials, then the following message -- sometimes immediately without the login request:

Something went wrong.

I have enabled cookies on my Chrome browser, and also tried defaulting to Edge -- same result.
I have also tried clearing the cookies and cache from Chrome;  not the solution.
Any advice appreciated.
