Hi @SFPacre,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you receive the error message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" on your HP printer and restarting doesn't resolve the issue, you can try several steps to potentially fix the problem. Here’s what you can do:

Check Ink Cartridges:

  • Ensure the ink cartridges are properly installed. Remove and re-install each cartridge to make sure they are securely seated and that there are no protective tapes still attached.
  • Check if the cartridges are empty or nearly empty and replace them if necessary.
  • Use genuine HP ink cartridges. Some printers might not work properly with non-original or refilled cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer while the printer is still turned on.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer on. This can help to reset any errors that are stuck in the printer's memory.

Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from power.
  • Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Clean the metallic contacts on the cartridges and in the cartridge slots in the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.
  • Dry the contacts and then re-install the cartridges.

Check the Print Head:

  • If your printer has a removable printhead (check your printer's manual), it might be clogged. Follow your printer's manual instructions to remove, clean, and reinstall the printhead.
  • Be careful when handling the printhead to avoid damaging it.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Sometimes, updating the printer’s firmware can resolve error messages. Check on the HP website or through your printer's control panel if there is a firmware update available.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
