We bought the 6200 desk jet all in one printer for our daughter to go to university. She started yesterday but can’t get the printer to connect to her laptop. She is in halls of residence and is on the university’s WiFi does it need to be connected to a router with an Ethernet cable???
please help!

The printer you name does not exist in my search.

Did find:

NOTE:  I also found an Officejet 6200 - this is really unlikely to be your daughter's printer - much older model of printer...

So, there is a bit of confusion.

I will answer as can be done.

Product Information for models in this series:

Used as an example for the purpose of answering the question:

Product Specifications for the HP ENVY Photo 6220 All-in-One Printer (K7G20D)

Connectivity

Ports
1 USB 2.0 client; 1 Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, dual band Wi-Fi 2.4/5 Ghz; BLE
Wireless capability
Yes, built-in dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n

Printer does not support Ethernet.

Connecting to the Wireless requires that one knows the password to the wireless network.  Some schools perhaps allow this - and would therefore provide the password to the wireless and likely the instructions to connect the printer to that network.

Your daughter needs the wireless password to the university network, the name of the correct SSID (network name) that the University wishes her to use for her printer, and the encryption method (likely AES).  Assuming the printer is allowed on the university network, all of this information should be available to students, perhaps by contacting the IT department or the dormitory captain.

If this is not the case, that is, the university does not allow printers on their network, then the printer can be connected to the computer using Wi-Fi Direct, that is, wireless that uses the printer's built-in wireless card to connect the printer to your daughter's computer.

The instructions for Wi-Fi Direct are included in the  User Guide

Chapter 7 Network setup - page 70

There is a lot of information in the Guide - reading more than the minimum can be helpful to better understand the options.

No Joy?  Not your printer?

No Worries - find the model of your printer, Open the printer support website,

Open Category Manuals > Find and Open the User Guide

Look for the chapter(s) on Connecting the printer and / or Network setup.

The How-to is about the same  for most printers - the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct instructions are in the User Guide for the specific printer.

For example,

Open Support Home

Enter the name of your device

When the website support page opens, Select (as available) a Category > Topic > Subtopic

OR

go directly to:

HP DeskJet 2620 All-in-One Printer

Open Category Manuals

Open the User Guide

Look for the chapter on "connect your printer"

In this case, Chapter 7 - starting on Page 61

If the university does not allow printers connected to the university wireless network, read section "Connect wirelessly to the printer without a router" - Page 65

Connections for printers that lack a printer control panel that supports text input can be a bit more difficult to manage.  To better understand how the printer works, start reading the Guide at the beginning.  For example, read the first sections on the "Control Panel Features" (starting on page 5).

After the printer is connected via Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to configure and view the printer setup.  User Guide - page 72

Example:

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
