Alienware 15R & HP officejet pro 8610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I spend way too much time trying to connect HP printers to my laptop with every HP printer I buy. I brought my hom eprinter to my office since my office printer died only after a year. an Officejet pro 8710 wont eve turn on. Now I have spent 4 hours trying to print on my 8610. Printer is connected to the same network the laptop is. HP smart shows that the installation status is installed. Printer says wifi is connected but laptop says printer is offline. I restarted both the printer and laptop several times. both connected and still says offline. I also went to HP support ran their assisstant after downloading it which had me download several other things to help figure out what was wrong after everything the program said it was finished and everything installed properaly and printer should work. The dang thing still shows offline. I am tired of this stuff always happening to me. It would be nice to connect and the printer just work. but no life isnt that easy. You shouldnt have to download 12 different HP programs to try to get your printers to work. You should just be able to install the software HP provides with the printer connect to the same network and just print!!!

@garretthill7, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any network issues

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix printing'.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Restart the network devices

  1. Turn off the Router, Printer, and the computer/ mobile devices.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Turn on the Router first and wait for all the lights to stabilize.
  4. Turn on the printer and allow it to configure itself.
  5. Turn on the computer/ mobile devices.

Also, assigning a static IP address to the printer may help.

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  2. Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  3. If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  4. Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  5. Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  6. Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  7. Click on the radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Let me know how this goes.
