Hi @Arthurjobb,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 5640 printer is printing wirelessly but not via USB, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

Check the USB Cable and Port:

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer.
  • Try a different USB cable to rule out a faulty cable.
  • Connect the USB cable to a different USB port on your computer to check if the issue is with the port.

Restart the Printer and Computer:

  • Turn off both your printer and computer. Restart them after a few minutes to reset their connection settings.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers for your Envy 5640 printer. Ensure you select the correct operating system version of your computer.
  • Install the drivers and restart your computer to see if the issue is resolved.

Set Printer as Default:

  • Go to the Control Panel on your computer, select 'Devices and Printers' (or 'Printers & scanners' in newer versions of Windows).
  • Right-click on your HP Envy 5640 printer and choose 'Set as default printer'. Try printing again.

Disable USB Selective Suspend:

  • This setting can sometimes cause issues with USB devices. To disable it:
    • Go to 'Control Panel', 'System and Security', and then 'Power Options'.
    • Click on 'Change plan settings' next to your current power plan.
    • Click on 'Change advanced power settings'.
    • Expand the 'USB settings' and then 'USB selective suspend setting'. Set it to 'Disabled'.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your computer's operating system is up-to-date, as updates can include fixes for hardware compatibility issues.

Printer Troubleshooter:

  • Run the printer troubleshooter provided by Windows:
    • Go to 'Settings', 'Update & Security', then 'Troubleshoot'. Select 'Additional troubleshooters', and run the 'Printer troubleshooter'.

Inspect the Printer Settings:

  • Make sure that the printer’s USB settings are correctly configured. Some printers have an option to disable USB connections, so it's worth checking the printer's menu.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
