My boss wants to print only black (mainly because faxes come in and color prints) and becaue he had an hp before where the colored ink leaked.  He wonders if the unit will print without a color cartridge installed.  If not, can he print with empty color cartridges.  He's trying to decide whether to buy it.  My HP8600 must have cartridges with ink or it won't print.  But I heard some will print without the color.  I can't seem to find a straight answer as I've cruised the internet

Hey there! @Gina8658, Thank you for joining the HP Forums!

I understand you need to know whether the printer can print without the color cartridges.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

You cannot print only in black without the color cartridges installed on your printer.

You will get error cartridges not installed.

Also, you cannot print using empty color cartridges installed on the printer.

Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. To prevent clogs in the printing mechanism and other print quality issues, a little ink must be available in all the cartridges to perform periodic servicing tasks.

Refer this article to know more information.

Let me know if this works!

Cheers! 🙂
